Safe haven for startups.

The Port of Amsterdam is the fourth port of Europe. As part of their ambition of being a smart, fast and clean port, the Port of Amsterdam founded Prodock: an incubator for port related startups.

Create THE place for startups in the ‘making industry’ in the Western Port area where they can develop, test and launch their innovative products.

the shell of the building as a raincoat and boxes underneath

our answer

At a strategic level we translated together with Urban Retail the Port Authority's ambition and objectives into a clear proposition and positioning.

On a spatial level we developed a flexible design concept for the building on the Moezelhavenweg in the Amsterdam port area. The design concept consists of two parts: the shell of the building as a raincoat and facilities like offices and workspaces as flexible boxes underneath. Due to this box-in-box principle it’s possible to create many different spaces for many different startups. As part of the concept we created a so-called aorta throughout the building. A visible clustering of all technical installations such as electricity, gas, water, data and air handling. Spaces can be plug & play connected on this aorta.

The glass separation between the hall and the offices creates a strong connection with the production spaces and makes them visible to visitors.

Offices and workspaces for innovative start-ups

An ultra-flexible incubator in the port of Amsterdam serving startups and the Port of Amsterdam shaping its ambitions as a sustainable port.
